Goal: Go off the grid
Quote: “Sometimes you just need to go off the grid to get your soul right.” - Unknown
Today I decided to do an off the grid day. No cellphone, no computer, not talking to anyone, only me to worry about. No deadlines, no list of chores to do, no work, nothing.
You don’t really realize how much you rely on your phone, until you don’t have it. I seemed to check the time a lot. I found that I was reaching for it and touching other empty surfaces to get the time. I slept in until 11:30am. I must have needed that. When you don’t have an alarm or any clocks, I guess you can sleep better. I did my workout DVD then showered and took my time. I did not care what else might be going on, and no phone to worry about, so why not. No one to ask me to do anything or go anywhere. If there was an emergency, they were going to have to call someone else for the day.
Then I went to Starbucks to get my half green half passion trenta size tea, a ham and swiss sandwich, and three vanilla bean scones. Delicious! I sat in my car at the park, as it was cold out, just journaling to attempt to get myself caught up on all the things I have been doing. I realized I do so much, and I have a lot of great friends, and family members, in my life. It reminds me life can be amazing. It is so odd not to look at my phone, not check Facebook, or what time it is, or the weather. It’s a weird feeling but it’s also great to relax and recharge.
I went to the dollar movie that afternoon and saw the movie, Brooklyn. The plot follows Eilis Lacey, a young Irish woman who emigrates to Brooklyn the early 1950s to find employment. After building a life there, she is drawn back to her hometown of Enniscorthy, Ireland and has to choose where she wants to forge her future. She was looking for opportunities for work in New York. She finds a job and meets a guy, and they begin dating, and she starts to feel more at home. When there is a death in her hometown, she must move back home to help her mother. The guy she is dating, Tony, asks her to marry him first and they secretly get married. She had not seen him for a long time.
No one knows about her marriage, so they set her up with a local man. She likes him but nothing serious, until he too asks her to marry him. She does not know what to do. The town finds out about the secret marriage, and she struggles with staying with her family, and small town, or following her heart to Brooklyn. It was a well-done movie and shows the struggle of coming from a small town, and leaving family behind, to find happiness.
I then headed home to cook a healthy dinner and do whatever I want. No technology, relax in peace, and enjoy quiet.
My lesson of hope: When you only have to worry about yourself, and no technology to look at, you see more, enjoy the quiet more, and just have quality relaxation time.
