Goal: Enjoy the time I have and make today count
Quote: “Slow down and enjoy life. It’s not only the scenery you miss by going too fast – you also miss the sense of where you are going and why.” – Eddie Cantor
I worked half a day today. We are in the middle of a spin at work. It occurs to me that some people might not know what a spin is so here is a definition.
Corporate lingo - Spin-offs are divisions of companies or organizations that then become independent businesses with assets, employees, intellectual property, technology, or existing products that are taken from the parent company. Shareholders of a parent company receive equivalent shares in the new company in order to compensate for the loss of equity in the original stocks. However, shareholders may then buy and sell stocks from either company independently; this potentially makes investment in the companies more attractive, as potential share purchasers can invest narrowly in the portion of the business, they think will have the most growth.
My lingo – everyone calls it a spin. The company I work for detached from their main parent company and became a public company standing on their own. This means a whole lot of work and extra hours for everyone involved. Late nights and working weekends. We had to create a whole new corporate office and find some great talent to move us forward so we can become successful and profitable. So far so good. I am writing this 7 years later and it’s still a busy and an ever-changing environment just like all the other companies out there. This means that occasionally I need to work on my day of hope to help.
This month I worked a half day and was able to get off work at noon. I was so tired and just wanted to go home and take a nap. Not today, it was my Day of Hope, so I am doing something just for me. I went for a long walk on the Eagle greenbelt, which runs along the river outside the building I work in. I enjoyed just exercising and enjoying nature and the peace and quiet. Such a beautiful area to walk and think.
I then spent some time at the spa as it’s right next door. Amazing facial and massage. It was very relaxing on a Monday afternoon. Then I got dinner to go from a restaurant called Bardenay which is a popular lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch spot and they have a great patio. They have wonderful appetizers, food, and drinks. I got my order and went to the downtown greenbelt to sit on a bench right by the river. I watched the sunset to close out the day.
My lesson of hope: It’s not easy to do something when you are tired. Going home, taking a nap, and doing nothing sounded much better, but I am so thankful for my day of hope. Taking one day a month has taught me that taking even just an afternoon and evening really calms me and sets me up for success for the coming weeks.
