Day of Hope #73

Sunday January 13 – Day of Hope #73

Goal: All day movie day

Quote: “If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story”.  – Orson Welles

On this Day of Hope, I brought a passenger with me. My boyfriend and I went to the movies to see two back-to-back movies. We first made breakfast, or rather he made me breakfast. Then we went to Edwards Movie Theater in Boise to see the first movie.

The movie was Second Act with Jennifer Lopez. Maya Vargas (Jennifer Lopez) is the assistant manager in her forties at the Value Shop store, where she has worked for the past 15 years. She is anxiously hoping to be promoted to manager. She was passed up by management and then successfully pursued a second chance at a corporate career, after a friend's son creates a fake resume and credentials for her. It was a good, lighthearted message about not wasting chances and living life.

We then crossed the parking lot to a sports bar for lunch and watched football and basketball. Then it was time for the next movie.

We decided to see the movie Green Book, which won the Oscar for Picture of the Year. The movie is based in the Bronx. In 1962, Italian American bouncer (Tony Lip) searches for new employment while the Copacabana was closed for renovations. He was invited to an interview with Dr. Don Shirley, an African American pianist in need of a driver for his eight-week concert tour through the Midwest and Deep South. Don hires Tony with the strength of his references. Don's record label gives Tony a copy of The Negro Motorist Green Book, a guide for African American travelers to find motels, restaurants, and filling stations that would serve them in the south.

It was a great movie. For me it was about how everyone deserves respect, regardless of their skin color. Then we went to dinner and just enjoyed hanging out. It was a wonderful day.

My lesson of hope: Don’t waste your chances and don’t ever give up on yourself. Times might be tough but if you keep going, so are you.
